To ensure your Safemo camera works reliably, it's important to know which Wi-Fi networks are supported. This article explains the types of networks your camera can connect to, common connection issues, and troubleshooting steps.
How to Check Your Camera's Connection Type
In the Safemo app, follow these steps to see if your camera is connected to the Smart Hub or Wi-Fi:
- Go to the Home page.
- Tap camera settings gear icon.
- Tap Network.
Camera and Network Compatibility
Connecting through the Hub and connecting directly to Wi-Fi may support different types of networks.
When Connected via Smart Hub
- The camera communicates with the Smart Hub through a dedicated connection, independent of the router's Wi-Fi encryption.
- The Smart Hub connects to your router through an Ethernet cable. As long as the Hub has a stable internet connection, the camera will work properly.
- In other words, if your camera is connected through the Smart Hub, the router's Wi-Fi encryption (WPA2, WPA3, or Enterprise) won't affect its connection.
When Connected Directly to the Router's Wi-Fi
If the camera is connected directly to a router's Wi-Fi, it only supports 2.4GHz home Wi-Fi. Encryption compatibility is listed below:
| Encryption Type | Supported | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WPA2-PSK (AES) | ✅ Yes | Recommended mode, most stable and reliable. |
| WPA/WPA2 Mixed Mode | ✅ Yes | Common on some older routers. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode | ✅ Yes | Will fall back to WPA2 in practice. |
| No Password (Open Network) | ✅ Yes | Works but is insecure, not recommended. |
| WPA3-Only | ❌ No | Not compatible with WPA3 |
| WPA-Enterprise (802.1X) | ❌ No | Not compatible with 802.1X authentication |
| Public Wi-Fi (requires SMS/Web login) |
❌ No | Cannot pass secondary authentication. |
If the camera attempts to connect to an unsupported network, you may encounter the following error messages:
- App Error Code: 6
- Camera Voice Prompt: "Connection failed"
How to Change Your Router's Encryption
If your router supports WPA2 but the camera still cannot connect properly, you can try adjusting the router settings as follows:
-
Log in to Your Router's Management AppOpen and sign in to your router's mobile app (make sure you're using the latest version).
-
Access Wi-Fi Security SettingsNavigate to Wireless Settings, Wi-Fi Security, or Network Security in the app.
-
Adjust the Security Settings
- Change Encryption Mode to WPA2-PSK (AES).
- Disable Special Authentication Methods: If features like SMS or web authentication are enabled, disable them.
- Try an Alternative Network: If possible, connect the camera to a different 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network to verify the issue.
-
Save Changes and ReconnectWait 1–2 minutes, then attempt to reconnect your camera.
Wi-Fi Security Note
While WPA3 is the latest Wi-Fi security standard, WPA2 remains highly secure and reliable. As long as you set a strong password for your home Wi-Fi, your network security will not be compromised by using WPA2.
