If your Safemo camera's battery drains faster than expected, this guide will help you understand why it happens and how to improve battery life step by step.
Summary
- 3+ months of battery life - Is expected under typical use for our batteries.
- Fast battery drain - Is usually caused by frequent motion triggers, live streaming, weak Wi-Fi signals, extreme temperatures, or night vision usage.
- Adjusting motion detection sensitivity, recording settings, sleep schedules, and live streaming duration - Are some of the things you can configure to significantly improve battery performance.
Battery Life Under Typical Use
Under typical usage conditions, a Safemo camera can last 3 months or longer. This estimate is based on:
- Approximately 20 motion recordings per day
- Each recording lasts around 10 seconds
- No frequent use of Live Stream or other power-intensive features
Actual battery life may vary depending on how often the camera is triggered, how long it records, and how frequently additional power-intensive features are used.
Why the Camera Battery Drains Too Fast
Battery life mainly depends on the Total Active Working Time of the camera, including motion detection, video recording, live streaming, and network connectivity. If your camera battery drains too fast, one or more of the following factors may apply.
Frequent Motion Triggers
Safemo cameras use a PIR sensor to detect changes in the environment. When motion is detected, the camera wakes up and starts recording. Frequent triggering causes the camera to activate repeatedly, which significantly increases power consumption.
Note: For more information on how motion detection works, you can check out this article: Motion Detection: Installation Guide & Tips.
Frequent Live Streaming
Viewing the live stream keeps the camera active the entire time. Long or frequent live viewing sessions will drain the battery much faster.
Poor or Unstable Wi-Fi Connection
When the Wi-Fi signal is weak or unstable, the camera repeatedly searches for a connection, resulting in increased battery usage.
Common sources of Wi-Fi interference include:
- Thick walls, bricks, or ceramic materials
- Large metal objects
- Electromagnetic devices
- Large amounts of liquid (such as aquariums)
Extreme Temperatures
The recommended operating temperature for Safemo cameras is 14°F to 113°F (-10°C to 45°C). Extremely hot or cold environments can reduce battery performance and shorten overall battery life.
How to Improve Battery Life
If you experience rapid battery drain on any of your Safemo cameras or batteries, the suggestions below can help improve battery life.
Key Areas to Focus On
- Reduce unnecessary motion detection
- Optimize recording and video settings
- Limit power-intensive features
- Improve Wi-Fi signal strength
Reduce Unnecessary Motion Detection
Proper camera placement can significantly reduce false motion triggers.
- Avoid aiming the camera at unnecessary moving objects such as swaying tree branches, fluttering flags, or flying insects.
- Ensure the camera is positioned to monitor only necessary areas.
When the camera is installed to avoid these triggers, it will not consume battery power responding to unnecessary motion events.
Optimize Recording and Video Settings
You can also optimize battery usage by adjusting the following settings in the Safemo App, depending on where your camera is installed.
Lower Motion Detection Sensitivity
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Motion Detection' and set the 'Motion Sensitivity' to Low or Medium.
Enable Cool Down
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Motion Detection' followed by 'Recording Settings'.
-
Enable 'Cool Down' and select an appropriate Cool Down Time.
Note: After a recording ends, the camera enters a cool down period. During this time, additional motion will not trigger new recordings, helping reduce battery consumption.
Shorten the Recording Duration
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Motion Detection' and set the Recording Duration up to 10 seconds.
Lower the Video Resolution
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Video' and set the Video Resolution to SD.
Use Sleep Mode or Sleep Schedule
Sleep Mode allows the camera to temporarily stop monitoring to help conserve battery. You can either turn on Sleep Mode to make the camera enter Sleep Mode immediately or set a schedule so the camera automatically enters Sleep Mode during specific time periods.
Option 1: Turn On Sleep Mode
Use this option if you want the camera to stop monitoring right away.
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Sleep Mode'.
- Turn on 'Sleep Mode'.
Option 2: Set a Sleep Schedule (Automatic Sleep Mode)
Use this option if you want the camera to automatically enter Sleep Mode during specific times.
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Sleep Mode'.
- Turn on 'Sleep Mode Schedule'.
- Tap 'Add Schedule' and set the desired time period.
What Happens During Sleep Mode
When the camera is in Sleep Mode, the following features are temporarily disabled:
- Motion Detection
- Video Recording
- Push Notifications
- Camera Alarms
Disable Night Vision
- Launch the Safemo app and tap on the Home icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Locate the 'Gear-⚙️' icon to the lower-right of your camera feed to access the camera settings.
- Tap on 'Motion Detection' and Turn off 'Night Vision'.
Note: In Night Vision mode, the camera records motion detected in low-light conditions, which increases power consumption. If Night Vision is not necessary, turning it off can help conserve battery.
Limit Live Streaming Time
Avoid opening the live stream for extended periods unless necessary, as continuous live viewing keeps the camera active and increases battery usage.
Improve Wi-Fi Signal Strength
A strong and stable Wi-Fi connection helps the camera communicate efficiently and prevents unnecessary power consumption caused by repeated reconnection attempts.
- Place the camera closer to your Wi-Fi router.
- Avoid physical obstructions and sources of interference.
- Consider using a Wi-Fi extender or a higher-performance router if needed.
